Tone is something that most acoustic guitarists don't pay enough attention to. In a way, tone is almost everything because this is your actual guitar sound.

For an example, WHERE you pick or fingerpick your guitar completely changes the sound.

For example, if you want to your acoustic sound to "cut through the mix", then you can pick the strings closer to the bridge, or if you want a warm, jazzy, swinging-blues sound, then you should pick closer to the neck or even on top of the neck.

There's actually several different ways you can do it. You can play with a solid drummer, a metronome, a beatbox or a sample. However, stay away from sounds that are "too cold". Choose warmer sounds like: tambourines or drums. Sometimes when you're jamming with musicians, you've only got your feet or your body's motions.
